It sounds like something from Superman’s home planet, but Kratom is actually a natural extract taken from a South American evergreen tree. The leaves of the plant provide medicinal properties, which when taken orally are said to reduce symptoms of withdrawal, increase energy levels, and elevate moods. The Mayo Clinic writes, “In Asia, people have used kratom in small amounts to reduce fatigue or treat opium addiction. In other parts of the world, people take kratom to ease withdrawal, feel more energetic, relieve pain, or reduce anxiety or depression. People take kratom to ease withdrawal because kratom evokes feelings of euphoria and may be obtained more easily than drugs prescribed for withdrawal.”
Like anything you take medicinally, it’s important to follow dosage instructions as listed on the supplement bottle, or through a doctor’s prescription. Although Kratom has shown some success in treating addiction, it’s not currently FDA approved in the United States.
In the Western Pacific Islands grows a plant called Piper methysticum. The root of the plant has psychoactive properties and has been used historically in religious ceremonies in Polynesia. Addiction Center states, “Kava has recently been looked at as a possible treatment for conditions such as anxiety, chronic stress, and insomnia. Some studies have suggested that kava might be a just as effective alternative to benzodiazepine drugs, although research is still limited on the topic. Kava is legally sold in the U.S. as a dietary supplement and is marketed as a sleep aid and muscle relaxant.”
Like drugs and alcohol, Kava has a strong effect on the brain, changing it with use. Natural chemicals inside the plant provide sensations of relaxation, draining the user of stress and anxiety.
- Passion Flower
Another calming plant is the passion flower, which is used topically to treat skin conditions such as burns and hemorrhoids. Orally, the flower is taken as a sleep aid or relaxant.
Passion flower grows in the United States and South America and used to have FDA approval as asleep aid. Currently, it has had said approval revoked, but is still sometimes taken as a sedative or anxiety reducer, especially in relation to detox and addiction recovery.
